The Hometown Umpiring Advantage - Why?

OK, a quick question; why do home teams get such an advantage in 50/50 calls from the umpires?

If we look back over recent series, almost every time the home team has got the rub of the green in the dubious (and sometimes not even vaguely dubious decisions). Australia certainly cannot complain, as we benefit from this in home tests, but likewise, India and England have had similar 'luck' when playing at home. It has always been accepted that this happens, however, I wonder why this is.

What is the reason for home teams getting the home-town decisions? What impacts upon the umpires to have this happen? If we assume (and please do) that the umpires are not intentionally biased towards any team, and make the decisions purely based upon what is in front of them, why do they make errors that consistently seem to favour the home side? Even if you accept that that some umpires are incompetent, in theory they should make an equal number of errors and neither team should benefit.

Is it due to the crowd's influence? Is it due to home teams putting subtle (and not so subtle) pressure onto the umpires? Is the conditions that allow home players to perform in such a way as to minimise the appearance of their guilt (i.e. in Australia and on bouncy pitches, Ponting's front foot lunge appears to get him outside the line of off-stump and umpires tend not to give him lbw). Is it a statistical illusion, based upon the fact that the home team is generally more likely to generate more close appeals and therefore get more decisions in their favour?

Perhaps we also need to include a point about our own biases in terms of interpreting umpiring errors as well. I reckon Australia has been clearly worse off in terms of decisions in the current Ashes series (not that this has had an impact upon the results - Australia has played like shit and doesn't deserve to win). However, I am naturally biased towards interpretating 50/50 decisions in a certain direction, and to therefore see things in a different light to what an English supporter would do. I can remember Nasser Hussain (for example) praising the umpires in a previous test for giving an LBW against Australia that Hawkeye showed to be clipping the top of leg stump. And only a day or so later, Nasser Hussain again praised the umpire's decision in not giving an English batsman out to a ball Hawkeye showed hitting almost the exact same spot. His interpretation of an almost identical incident was influenced by his own bias. Perhaps we are all just similarly guilty.

Of course, the home town advantage is not limited to specific sports or countries. It occurs in soccer, league or whatever sport you care to mention. However, I can see why the home town advantage plays more of an influence in certain games such as league or soccer, where the home town fans can respond instantly to off-sides, forward passes etc, and the umpire/ref must be affected (to some extent) by that pressure. But in cricket, most of the spectators are not in a position to place instant pressure onto an umpire, and the decisions occur after consideration (and not during the flow of a game such as soccer, AFL etc).

I would be interested to see what the ICC Umpiring Panel thinks about this one, however, they would undoubtedly tell me how how high the standard of international umpiring is, and how they get 95% of all decisions correct. Yeah right - they must go to the same school of media relations as Andrew Hilditch.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong Super Sixes 2009, Pakistan beat India, Pakistan defeated India in Hong Kong Super Sixes Tournament here on Saturday.

In the event being held at the Kowloon Cricket Club, India batted first and made 65 runs for the loss of one wicket in the allotted five overs.

Their main scorers for India were Manish Pandey (28) and Groove Dhamen (27) while Junaid Zia took one wicket for Pakistan.

Pakistan reached the required target without losing any wicket.

Ahmed Shahzad scored 31 runs from only nine balls while captain Faisal Iqbal made 26.

Pakistan were beaten by Sri Lanka and England in earlier matches.

The Lankan selectors said Jayasuriya's performance in India would be under the scanner.

Sri Lankan maestro Sanath Jayasuriya has been told by the selectors that he would feature in the team as an allrounder and might have to bat down the order. He also has been told that his performance against India would be under the scanner, leading upto the 2011 World Cup.

Speaking to reporters in Colombo, the chief selector Ashantha de Mel said, "What we expect from Sanath is that one in three games he should win a match for Sri Lanka which he was doing in the past. But now that has reduced, we are a little concerned about it. In the Champions Trophy in South Africa his performance was below par. That's the reason why we have gone in with the option of playing him as an all rounder."

"We have spoken to Sanath on the role he has to play He has the option to play as an allrounder. We have considered him for this tour only, after that his selection will depend on his performance. He has to perform to hold his place in the team for the World Cup," said the chairman of selectors.

de Mel said the selectors did not have a particular position for Jayasuriya in their mind and that Jayasuriya's flexibility would be his advantage. "Especially in the batting power play having a spinning allrounder like Sanath is useful in the subcontinent because he can hit the ball. He might bat in the middle or in the top order depending on the situation," he said.

"Also, the World Cup will be held in the subcontinent where his left-arm spin can become useful. He can perform that role because in South Africa in the game against New Zealand when they scored 300 runs he was the one who bowled ten overs for three wickets and 30 runs. He has done well in the subcontinent especially with his bowling."

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara felt Sri Lanka's poor ODI performances in the past couple of years has been due to inconsistent batting.

"The biggest let down we had is our batting. We suffered because we had lots of batting position changes going up and down the order. For the batting to improve you must give the players the confidence. They must know what role they are supposed to play. Role identification has been a big problem. Except for the openers no one knew what their role was in the side," Sangakkara said.

"We have never clicked in all departments those are things the team ignored for a while. The players have now started to realise that they take a lot of pride not just representing the country but to be up to the task that is required of them by the team," the Lankan skipper added.

Ricky Ponting was in fine touch in posting a half-century Michael Hussey compiled an excellent one-day innings of 73 to build on Ricky Ponting's solid platform as Australia fought off an Indian revival to post 292 for 8 in Vadodara. Four Australians reached half-centuries and it was enough to set India a challenging target despite the batting Powerplay working to India's advantage late in the innings.

Ponting, Hussey, Cameron White and Tim Paine all posted half-centuries but India's bowlers ensured none of them went on to triple figures. Hussey's confidence was key in ensuring the good start was not wasted and in a typically anonymous, accumulating style he compiled his 73 from 54 balls.

Hussey pierced the field several times for boundaries in the final overs and, while he generally took few risks, an enormous straight six off Praveen Kumar in the penultimate over resulted in a lost ball. In the final over he sent a catch down deep midwicket's throat as Ishant Sharma delivered a brilliant 50th over that brought two wickets for one run and could yet prove a turning point.

Hussey ticked the score over with hard running but Australia were disappointed with a result of 3 for 33 from their batting Powerplay, which began in the 43rd over with Hussey and White well set. White had started to find the middle of the bat - a clean six over long-on from Suresh Raina's only over was his highlight - but skied the second ball of the Powerplay and was caught off Ashish Nehra for 51.

Adam Voges holed out to deep midwicket off Harbhajan Singh and James Hopes was run out in a horrible mix-up with Hussey, whose calling has been questionable in the past few months, to leave Australia slightly adrift of what could have been a bigger score. The Hussey-White partnership had been worth 76 and continued on the solid platform built by Ponting and Paine.

They combined for a 97-run second-wicket partnership that proved batting first was not a problem despite the early-morning start. Ponting was fierce against the fast men and his highlights included a crunching, aerial straight drive for four off Ishant and a top-edged six when he advanced at Praveen Kumar and hooked a bouncer.

Praveen felt the brunt of Ponting's form and was dispatched for consecutive boundaries through midwicket and then punched through cover. Ponting also enjoyed facing the spinners and launched Ravindra Jadeja over long-off for a six that was parried over the boundary by Nehra, who slightly misjudged the catch opportunity.

Jadeja eventually had his revenge when Ponting, on 74, played back to a delivery that straightened and was trapped in front of middle stump. For much of his innings Ponting had the assistance of Paine, who kept his position as opener despite the presence of Shaun Marsh in the squad.

Paine was particularly strong off his pads, flicking over and through the on-side field whenever the fast men bowled too straight. He was caught behind for 50 trying to cut a wide ball from Ishant, who along with Nehra in the early stages was particularly impressive and bowled full enough to allow the ball to swing.

Nehra had made the initial breakthrough in the second over, when there was some movement in the air, and he had Shane Watson adjudged lbw for 5. Watson was given out by umpire Shavir Tarapore, one of two Indian officials on the field after the English umpire Mark Benson missed the match due to illness.
